WHAT IS IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a process used to help people with fertility problems or those who want to have a child but are unable to conceive naturally.
During IVF, eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilized eggs, or embryos, are then implanted into the woman's uterus where to develop pregnancy. It's one of the most widely used assisted reproductive technologies and has helped many people around the world become parents.
When is IVF recommended?
IVF may be recommended in several situations. Depending on type of infertility issue, IVF, along with some other treatments can be recommended.
Ovaries release eggs in the fallopian tube, where the eggs meet the sperms. When the fallopian tubes are blocked, sperm may not be able to reach the egg for fertilization, or the fertilized egg may not be able to travel to the uterus for implantation.
Ovulation is the process of release of eggs from the ovaries during a woman's menstrual cycle. When Ovulation is disrupted or absent, there will be fewer eggs available for fertilization.
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, which may interfere with the normal function of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus.
Uterine fibroids are non cancerous growths of the uterus that often develop during childbearing years. These growths can vary in size and can distort the shape and size of the uterus. While the exact cause of fibroids is not fully understood, several factors may contribute to their development, including hormonal factors, genetics, and other unknown influences.
In males, infertility issue where the quality or quantity of the sperm is not sufficient to fertilize the eggs, IVF treatment may be needed. Issues may range from Low Sperm count, Reduced Sperm Motility, Ejaculatory disorders, Azoospermia etc.
Genetic disorders are conditions caused by abnormalities or mutations in an individual's genetic material (DNA). These disorders can be inherited from one or both parents or can occur sporadically due to new mutations and can affect various aspects of health, development, and functioning.
Unexplained infertility is a diagnosis given when a couple has been unable to conceive after a comprehensive evaluation, and no specific cause for their infertility has been identified. Despite thorough testing, including assessments of both partners' reproductive health, ovulation, sperm quality, fallopian tube function, and uterine health, no clear explanation for the infertility can be found
There are some other factors which cause infertility where IVF can be helpful like- advanced female age, poor egg quality, Inability of sperm to survive in cervical mucus etc.
IVF is typically considered after other, less invasive fertility treatments have been unsuccessful. However, the decision to pursue IVF depends on various factors, including the couple's medical history, age, and personal preferences, and it's usually made in consultation with a fertility specialist.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
IVF Treatment first starts with a correct assessment of the couple’s fertility.
Based on the results of important infertility tests, doctor creates a treatment plan. Once IVF is selected as the treatment option, Doctor as well as your counsellor will set out some pre- treatment fitness plan for you based on your weight, thyroid and other conditions.
The IVF procedure starts with preparation of eggs, before retrieval. Once eggs and sperm are available, they are fertilized together in the laboratory and monitored, before transferring back into the female uterus. Depending on the test results, doctor may add more treatment steps like ICSI, PGT etc.

Infertility Assessment
Before the start of treatment, severity and type of infertility is understood. This has three steps-
OVARIAN STIMULATION
The first step in IVF treatment is ovarian stimulation, where fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs for about 8-14 days. Regular monitoring through blood tests and transvaginal ultrasound scans is conducted to assess follicle growth and hormone levels.
EGG RETRIEVAL
Once the ovarian follicles containing mature eggs have reached an optimal size, a trigger injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or a GnRH agonist is administered to induce final egg maturation. Approximately 36 hours later, the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration.
SPERM EXTRACTION
Then, the male partner provides a semen sample which is processed in the laboratory to isolate high-quality sperm for fertilization. In cases of male factor infertility or when sperm retrieval techniques are needed, sperm may be obtained through techniques such as TESE/ PESA
FERTILISATION
The retrieved eggs are then fertilized with sperm in the laboratory through either conventional insemination or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is directly injected into each mature egg.
EVALUATION OF EMBRYOS
Fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in the laboratory for 3 to 5 days, as they develop into multicellular embryos. During this time, embryologists monitor embryo development and quality to select the most viable embryos for transfer.
EMBRYO TRANSFER
One or more selected embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus. The number of embryos transferred depends on factors like woman's age, embryo quality, and previous IVF treatment history.
IVF Procedure
After the assessment is done and patient is declared medically fit to undergo the treatment, IVF procedure will begin
Test for Pregnancy
Approximately 10-14 days after embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is performed to determine whether implantation has occurred and pregnancy has been achieved. If the test is positive, ongoing prenatal care is initiated to monitor the progress of the pregnancy.
